Malawi's ex-president wanted for "abuse of office and money laundering"
The Police in Malawi today issued an arrest warrant for former President
Joyce Banda over a corruption scandal, known as Cashgate, during her
time in office.
In issuing the arrest warrant for the Country's former President Joyce Banda, Malawi's
police said they have discovered "credible evidence" in connection with
the $250million Cashgate corruption scandal which they say "raises reasonable
suspicion that the former president committed offenses relating to abuse
of office and money laundering".
Cashgate is touted to be the biggest financial scandal in Malawi's history in which officials of Mrs Banda's government were accused of looting funds under her watch.
Ex - President Joyce Banda who is outside the country has not commented on the allegations.
Meanwhile, Malawi's Police say they will ask Interpol for help in getting her
to return home.
